Yukon Business Sector Overview

Yukon’s private business sector is a healthy mix of large companies supported and integrated with numerous small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).  The business sector in Yukon is very entrepreneurial with roughly one business per ten residents resulting in a high number of home-based businesses and an industrial labour force.  Roughly a third of Yukon businesses are in the professional, scientific and technical services or the construction sector.

Small and medium-sized enterprises constitute the majority of Yukon’s business establishments. This sector is Yukon’s largest private sector employer and includes anything from professional, scientific and technical services to retail trade, construction, accommodation, food and other services. Over one third of working Yukoners are employed by firms with less than 50 employees and an additional 27 per cent are employed by businesses with 50-100 workers. All told, the SME sector in Yukon accounts for approximately 63 per cent of private sector employment. Opportunities for SMEs, created by growth in other key sectors of Yukon’s economy, an expanding consumer base and the unparalleled Yukon lifestyle, combine to attract entrepreneurs of all stripes forming a vibrant and healthy SME business sector.

A comprehensive overview of Yukon’s private business sector is compiled through frequent business surveys conducted by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
